The science of safe sleep continues to advance, and we are pleased that we have been able to accelerate the progress!

The Secure Beginnings Breathe-Through Crib Mattress meets and exceeds all the safety standards described in the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) 2016 guidelines, and is the preferred crib mattress for any parent concerned about their infant rolling prone.
Not only do we meet the AAP’s 2016 guidelines, we helped change them!

Asphyxia occurs when the body (tissue and organs) fails to get the required amount of oxygen due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the surrounding air, which leads to hypoxia, a condition associated with SIDS.  Infants sleeping on their tummy increases the likelihood of difficulty in breathing.  This is because the exhaled CO2 during breathing does not escape and is more concentrated in their bedding material.  Most infants will turn their head, but some do not.  It is believed these infants have a brain stem abnormality.  The problem we face; we do not know which infants will or will not turn their heads to get fresh oxygen, leaving all infants at risk.

CO2 Rebreathing Comparison

The Secure Beginnings Crib Mattress has a 10 fold decrease in CO2 accumulation compared to a firm fiberfill crib mattress

Based on scientific testing developed and conducted under the supervision of Dr. William W. Fox, Division of Neonatology, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Dr. Thomas H. Shaffer, Department of Biomedical Research, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, the Secure Beginnings Breathe-Through Crib Mattress poses a significantly lower hazard for carbon dioxide rebreathing than the tested firm crib mattress with a tight-fitting cotton sheet. While the firm crib mattress represents a known low hazard item and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to reduce the risk of SIDS, inconclusive causes of SIDS cases have occurred on firm crib mattresses. The Secure Beginnings Breathe-Through Crib Mattress demonstrates a significant decrease in carbon dioxide retention compared to the firm crib mattress and presents a significantly lower hazard level than the firm crib mattress currently recommended by the AAP.

Results:  The Secure Beginnings Crib Mattress has a 10 fold decrease in carbon dioxide accumulation compared to a firm crib mattress.  The average breaths per minute of a newborn to six-month-old is 30 to 60 - meaning the carbon dioxide would be gone before the infants takes in their next breath of air if face straight down.

International Firmness Testing

“There is often an assumption that the firmness of baby products is regulated but, alarmingly, it isn’t.  This is an oversight and an area of infant safety that has been neglected. The United States has been slow in recognizing this.”  Dr. Ron Somers.

The Secure Beginnings Breathe-Through Crib Mattress has passed the Australia/New Zealand Standard for mattress firmness (AS/NZS 8811.1:2013).

The Secure Beginnings Mattress is the only mattress in the US that has passed the test specified in the Australia/New Zealad standard, method 1: Sleep Surfaces - Test for firmness, is the only international standard to fromally address the issue of minimum safe firmness for all infant sleep surfaces.

Our testing is based on the most recent US ASTM standards.
However, we pride ourselves that we go beyond, using more stringent international testing standards.

Air Permeability Testing Based on ASTM Standards

A Consumer Product Safety Commission accredited lab, Intertek, tested the air permeability of the Secure Beginnings’ Breathe-Through Crib Mattress. This testing was conducted using the ASTM D737 - 04(2008)e1 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics. The data are recorded in ft3/ft2.min of air. Based on this test data, the Secure Beginnings’ Breathable Crib Mattress has an air permeability rate over 330 times ((average flow (ft3/ft2.min:) 335)) compared to a standard crib mattress with vinyl cover((average flow (ft3/ft2.min:) .15))

CPSC Flammability Standards

Our products have been tested by an approved Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lab, and meet all the CPSC standards for safety and flammability including compliance with California T.B. 117 and CPSC 16 CFR part 1633 for flammability.  Our mattress sleep surface is made from an advanced medical grade spacer fabric that contains NO toxic chemicals or fire retardants.

ASTM F2933-13 Compliance

All Secure Beginnings products are in voluntary compliance with ASTM2933-13 crib mattress safety and labeling standards.

Childcare Center Licensing

Our Mini Breathable Crib Mattress is approved by the Michigan Department of Human Services Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing (Child Care Licensing Division), for use in Child Care Centers in Michigan.
