“As a pediatric physical therapist, I have spent the past 9 years of my career treating infants and toddlers with special needs in the birth to 3 year old population. I have always instructed my clients to leave their babies positioned on their backs when sleeping because of the increased risk of SIDS. I have, however, always felt conflicted, as sleeping on the back increases the risk of developing a flattened head, decreases the baby’s comfort level with tummy time, and minimizes the baby’s sensory input to the oral motor region. Variety is normal, and I have always believed sleeping in one position decreases variety for developing infants in the special needs population as well as in the typical population. When my daughter was born 4 months ago, I was too fearful of SIDS to place her on her belly to sleep on a regular mattress, and was beyond delighted to discover this breathable crib mattress! This is wonderful! My son sleeps 10x bettor on the Heaven Sent Crib Mattress. My son has never slept with blankets in the bed. At night we put him into a Halo Sleep Sack. On a conventional mattress he was always sweating when I checked on him at night. In the HSM he has only been sweating on three occasions. This “mattress” is Amazing!

I just love this mattress.... I am a FTM who is super paranoid of something happening to my 6 month old daughter. Though I know sids is not 100 percent preventable, At least I know I have a safe mattress for my baby girl to rest her head on at night, compared to the plastic cover one that came with my crib that I refused to put her in. Our daughter passed away last March because she rebreathed through her traditional crib mattress. Since we're expecting another baby this year, we ordered the Secure Beginnings base and mattress cover. It arrived in the mail today, in fact! It was SO easy to set up, and I love the design. I tried breathing through the mattress cover myself; it's definitely breathable. Thank you so much for this product. We might actually get some sleep when this baby arrives.

Thank you for everything. There is no price I can put on peace of mind. I did not even know this mattress existed until I found my baby sleeping with his face down and freaked out so I googled what to do. I found your mattress on a blog where other mothers were having the same problem. In the end, I am very happy with everything and so is my baby. I am already spreading the word amongst my peers so that they buy the right mattress from the start.

I hope your company does very well and penetrate the Canadian market here soon. It would have been nice to have seen this option in Toys R' Us or Dear-Born Baby when I first had my baby (I didn't sleep for a week after my baby was born because I was so paranoid about SIDS and I had to keep poking him awake when I thought he was too quiet when sleeping). Found my baby sleeping on his face again...but this time he is on his new breathable baby mattress so no worries! =) Thank you for inventing this!

Secure beginnings saved my marriage. Okay, maybe that isn’t quite accurate…but it certainly did save my sanity! My husband and I both have demanding professions as a social worker and an attorney, respectively. I knew that having a child meant that we would be sacrificing sleep, among other things, but we were prepared for that change in our lifestyle. What we weren’t prepared for was having an infant that at four months of age was still waking up every hour to hour-and-a-half throughout the night. Not only were my husband and I exhausted (we literally felt like Zombies!), so too was our son, Alex. His evening fussiness seemed to really peak at around 4 months also, and I’m quite certain this was due to the poor sleep he was getting throughout the night.

Our sleep struggles with Alex began at around 2-3 months of age. From birth through about 2-3 months of age, we found swaddling really assisted Alex both in falling asleep and staying asleep. The swaddle, which helped to counter the startle reflex which would wake him up when he was on his back, combined with a pacifier seemed to be our ‘golden ticket’. A wise friend once told me that the shortcuts you use to soothe your child early on will later become your worst nightmare. Truer words have never been spoken. Sure enough, we, like so many other parents out there, found ourselves engaged in “the binky war” on a nightly basis. Alex would get swaddled and then placed his back to sleep, with his pacifier. He’d fall asleep easily, he just wouldn’t stay asleep. Ten minutes after falling asleep, when the pacifier invariably fell out of his mouth, he would wake up, scream, and we’d start the whole process over…and over…and over. If Alex wasn’t swaddled, he could use his hand or thumb to soothe himself, in place of the pacifier. However, without being swaddled, Alex would continually startle himself awake through the night. We were totally at a loss for what to do!

What was clear to us was that Alex really wanted to be sleeping on his tummy. On his stomach, he would not need to be swaddled as he would not experience the startle reflex, so he could have his hands free to self-soothe. Like any parent, however, my husband and I were terrified at the thought of putting Alex on his stomach on a regular mattress. We worried about SIDS and more specifically, we worried that because a traditional mattress is not breathable, the carbon dioxide gases that he was expelling would get trapped, ultimately suffocating him.

In our search for a solution, we came across Secure Beginnings®. The breathable mattress in the Secure Beginnings® sleep system means that when Alex rolls on his stomach at night (which he ultimately does every night), I can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that the carbon dioxide he expels is not getting trapped between my son and his mattress. Now, we still start out by putting our son on his back to sleep, in a SleepSack®. Soon thereafter, he rolls to his stomach, sticks his hand in his mouth and SLEEPS!! Additionally, Alex’s evening fussiness has decreased, and my husband and I are starting to feel human again. A more rested parent is a better and more tolerant parent, in my opinion. We all have benefited from the Secure Beginnings® sleep system, and that is priceless.

Finally, I will say that you cannot put a price tag on peace of mind. If you were going to, however, Secure Beginnings® is a bargain, in my opinion. To begin, with Secure Beginnings®, you do not need the expensive crib sheet sets that most parents will spend upwards of $200 on. You can still use a dust ruffle with this system, but the rest of the items in the crib set are not only unnecessary, but in my opinion they are unsafe. You still do not want loose blankets and stuffed animals in the crib, regardless of whether you use the Secure Beginnings® sleep system or a traditional mattress—so don’t waste your money. Additionally, when evaluating the price of the Secure Beginnings sleep system, in order to get a traditional mattress that is made with the same quality materials as the Secure Beginnings mattress, one that is free from chemicals and filler materials that you would find in a traditional mattress, you will spend between $600 and $1000. Even after spending all of that money, you will still not have a breathable mattress, you will merely have a mattress made with higher quality materials.

I wanted to share what I experienced tonight/this morning. We have had a secure beginnings mattress for a few months and we kept putting off putting Ty, our more precious than life 5 month old in because even though we knew, in theory, that nothing bad could happen to him on this mattress...we were still scared.

He has been sleeping on the secure beginnings mattress for a few weeks but it is not until about a half hour ago that justified every penny spent on your mattress even though we had already spent over $300 on an organic and firm mattress.

Tonight is the first night Ty has rolled on his stomach to sleep. When I first woke up and saw this at 5:30 am, I was horrified. I am now, at 6am, going to turn out the lights and get some much needed sleep as I know he is safe and secure on your wonderful product. Thank you for making me breathe easier while he sleeps very peacefully!
